Does CF Number Placement Really Matter on Your Boat?

If you’ve registered a boat in California, your CF number isn’t just paperwork—it legally needs to be displayed on your hull. But placement and presentation both matter.

CF Number Requirements (CA Law)

  • Must be on both sides of the forward half of the boat
  • At least 3 inches high, block letters, contrasting color
  • Properly spaced: CF 1234 AB or CF-1234-AB

Failing to follow these guidelines can lead to fines or registration issues.

Compliance Meets Clean Design

Sure, placement is required—but how it looks is up to you. Crooked numbers, peeling vinyl, or clashing colors take away from your boat’s look, even if they’re technically legal.

At Vessel Visuals, we create CF number kits that are compliant and clean—matched to your boat’s color scheme, cut from marine-grade vinyl, and designed to last.
